The twentieth century was not the most peaceful in U.S. history. The attack on Pearl Harbor was a terrible defeat. From 1939-1945 was the heat of World War 2. The Poland invasion, the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki all accrued in those six years. Armed forces of more than 17 million fought on land, air, and sea. The morning of December 7, 1941 was one of the huge turning points in World War 2 (Hall).
One hundred Japanese bombers and eight small submarines attacked Pearl Harbor totally undetected. The battleships where not ready and many people were not on guard. In an hour and five minutes the battleship Arizona was sunk. Four other battleships and cruisers suffered severe damage. Many people thought the Japanese would come back knowing that Hawaii had little defense but they didn't. A total of 2,403 people mostly from the U.S. navy died in the attacks. Over 1,000 more were injured. The Japanese only lost 68 men. With in no time the United States declared war. This lead on to America bombing Japan in August of 1945 (Holocaust History).
